How to Remove the Smell of Mildew

Your worst nightmare has officially become a reality; your home has flooded ruining many of your precious belongings.

Your basement has been cleaned up and drained of any excess water but the room still has a lingering smell of mildew. How do you get rid of that?

Because the basement is underground, the answer is not going to be as simple as ‘open up a window.’ To fully remove the smell from the area, you are going to need to locate the source of the stench. The easiest way to get rid of the smell is just to throw away the item entirely, if it is the wallpaper, carpet, clothing, furniture or any other removable object that is the best route to go.

Then place a dehumidifier in the room, this will help decrease the moisture levels in the air so the mildew can stop growing.

If the mildew is coming from a non-fabric material, you’re going to need to get some bleach and a scrub brush to remove the stench. Unfortunately, there is no quick and easy trick for this. Scrubbing out the smell of mildew requires a little bit of time and some elbow grease.  When you’re done, simply wash off the surface with plain water and wipe it dry with a towel.
